Restoring a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am

    Monday, March 10, 2008, 09:24 PM [General]

    Monday March 10th

My son Ben will be 16 in August, So we bought a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am - A former Georgia car to restore. So for the past week or so, we stripped it down to the tub, and stripped the paint off the fenders, hood, doors, and deck lid. We have completed the minor body work on those parts, and have them in primer. The car was really pretty rust free, with only minor dings. It is a 6.6 litre - 403 Olds motor (I'd rather it would have been a 400 Pontiac) automatic, positraction, and T-Tops. It's going to be a nice ride for him. I have until August 4th to get it done for him, so I'll have to hustle. The motor seems to run fine and has good - even compression so I will wait on rebuilding that for now. We're waiting now for UPS to deliver the hood bird and graphics, then I'm going to paint the base coat, put the bird on the hood, then clear coat the hood once the bird is on. It should help keep the decal from fading or from getting scratched.

So, what have you been doing in your spare time?

    TC,

Any chance you'd mind posting a few photos of the project as you go. First of all, this sounds like a great car for your boy. Secondly, I'd love to see how things go as you continue to tear into it.

    Good Luck,

    Otis
