Has the World Gone Mad?:Art Collides with Muscle

Friday, May 16, 2008, 03:56 PM CST [General]

When does art cross the line? Maybe, just maybe, it is when a guy intentionally crushes two perfectly good muscle cars in what can only be described as a controlled head-on collision.

Believe it or not, artist Jonathan Schipper wasn’t even crushing the cars in hopes of lining his pockets with the cold-hard cash many are getting these days from scrap dealers. That might have made too much sense. Instead, he was simply trying to make a statement by completly destroying two Firebirds, one an early 80s model, the other from the late 70s.

Artist Jonathan Schipper began his artistic endeavor a few years ago by mounting hydraulic presses on the ends of a track and slowly smashing two die-cast model cars into each other. While many in the art world found the concept amusing, it apparently didn’t garner Schipper the recognition that he felt he deserved.

So, in order to make an even bigger statement about what he views as the slow death of the American Muscle car, Schipper kicked his project up a notch.

During a recent art show in Chicago, the artist expanded his original artistic vision by creating a life-sized version of his original work of art.

His latest creation, aptly titled, the “Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle,” crushed the pair of Firebirds into one another over a six-day period simulating an automobile collision for the art world to enjoy while sipping their cups of Chablis and other imported alcoholic beverages.

The movement – approximately 1cm per hour – is barely perceptible to the naked eye.

Call me a critic, but I just don’t get it. Maybe, just maybe, if this guy was crushing a couple of Ford Escorts, or even a late-model Chevy Caprice I might be able to enjoy this artistic endeavor.

Total stupidity, this guy is a complete idiot. This is not what you call art...it is what you call garbage

This is not in the least bit amusing. I will not even watch it due to some morbid curiosity. As a pontiac fan and owner of a 78 formula in terrible need of restoration, I would like to know how to get in contact with this idiot to see if there will at least be used parts made available once the exibit closes. If not, may the victims of this trajic episode rest in peace.

Just seeing the photo posted gives me chills. I have just finished restoring a '63 Pontiac Catalina, and I have visions of something like that happening to it ON THE STREET...ACCIDENTALLY! But CERTAINLY not ON PURPOSE! Heart-rending! But to see somebody INTENTIONALLY do that? That's just crazy! As American Muscle Car on Speed Channel always endS: "DON'T CRUSH 'UM! RESTORE 'UM!" This "artist" needs his head examined!

Little boys like to smash their toys. This person just never grew up. I guess he has more money than brains.
