Another car bought as a winter beater. I dumped a lot of money into this car to keep it running nice, and learned my lesson about newer cars that are hard to work on -- it is the only front-wheel-drive car I’ve ever owned. When I sold it in the late 1990s, it ran and worked well.
One day, while crossing the Mississippi River bridge in Hastings, Minn., I saw smoke coming from under the hood of a maroon and silver Grand Am. I remember joking to myself, “That guy should never have bought a Grand Am. Those cars are junk.” When I got up to the car, I realized it was my old Grand Am.
A year or so later, I got to know the buyer I had sold it to years earlier and surprisingly, he didn’t punch me when we learned we had the Grand Am in common. I learned that he, too, had problems with the car, and the night I saw that Grand Am cross the bridge with smoke pouring out from under its hood was the last time it was on the road. I hope it’s a POS Honda now.
