1984-'86 Pontiac Grand Prix
I wish I had the VIN for this car, but I don’t. Heck, I had so many 1980s rear-drive GM coupes, I don't even remember the year. However, I left my mark on it enough that I am hoping someone will recognize it. This car came out of St. Paul, Minn., via my cousin. It was dinged up and had rust, but with a fresh transmission, it was a nice, strong runner. Coupled with a 305-cid V-8, it was a heck of a lot of fun, too. I used to whip doughnuts in every parking lot I could find after a fresh snow fall with the car and it didn’t miss a beat. I owned it during the period that I would rename all of my winter beaters. My 1980s Pontiac Bonneville became a “Deville” by breaking off the “Bonn” part of the name and painting a “D” in front of the remaining “eville.” This Grand Prix became a GTO after I made a stencil, taped the stencil to each rear fender and sprayed in silver paint. The Pontiac had the cool two-tone blue paint scheme with a dark blue cloth bucket seat interior with a console. Before I bought it, and while it was in St. Paul, thieves broke the steering column and drove off with it. Since these cars are rarities with the console, the victim of the theft installed a replacement steering column with the shift linkage on the column, instead of the console. If I remember correctly, the column was brown against a blue interior, so it stood out. The automatic transmission was still shifted via the floor-mounted shifter, but the column moved every time you changed gears. Anyways, this car was sold when spring came around, and I saw it a year or two later, still with “GTO” painted on the rear fenders, in the St. Paul area. Is it still out there? What year was it exactly as I cannot remember? I hope it’s still out there, because it was a fun car. I know I’d love to find a mint twin to it.Angelo Van BogartGrand Prixhttp://community.oldcarsweekly.com/www.oldcarsweekly.com/gallery/view_gallery.one?gal_id=1 |
