What are you going to build your daughter?

Guys, I could use a little advise here.

My daughter will be getting her driver's license in a couple of years and I'd like to build her a car that is relatively economic, safe, and that she will enjoy driving...but isn't so hot that all the wrench-heads at school will notice her or spend too much time checking out her car!

I have considered a nice little metro, but I have some concerns about her driving it on the busy highways around here. What do y'all suggest?

At this time, I am open to any and all suggestions....

If by "Metro" you mean a GEO metro, I'd say that might make her her the butt of jokes. If you mean a Nash metropolitan, that would be cool, certainly unknown to most teenagers, different from the Hondas and Toyotas , et al, thay all drive. AND, it can't get out of its own way, so NO SPEEDING TICKETS. But it might be difficult to find a decent one. Seriously, most youngsters today end up with small Hondas, Toyotas, etc because they are plentiful, relatively cheap to buy and run, and there is a VAST aftermarket for improvements and customizing. So, I would stay away from what seems an obvious choice, a small economy car, because thats what most of the teens hot rod today (much to the chagrin of old hot rodders like me). So, how abour an older sedan or coupe like a Falcon, Pinto, Vega or Monza? Ignore ralph nader there was nothing wrong with these cars. Mercury comets, Ford Topaz might be other possibilities.Hope this is the type of response you were looking for.Rich

I would agree, that a Nash Metro would be a cool car for your daughter. My girls saw one in the Nancy Drew movie that came out last year and they thought that it was pretty cool. And Like Richard, I would agree that the Falcon would be a good choice. However, I'm not sure about the Pinto and Mozas. Depending on what you are looking to spend, a VW Beetle might be a good choice, but since the new ones came out a few years ago it looks like the prices are going on on these.Personally, when I was that age, I had my heart set on a '58 Pontiac Hearse that a guy in our town had. I'm not sure that it is what your daughter would want, but I thought that it had tons of possibilities. This leads to my question, what car did y'all want when you were about to get your license?

Big is beautiful. How 'bout a nice, full-size car from the 1980s? Grand Marquis, Ford LTD, Caprice are all good cars that, in town, won't get your daughter very many  speeding tickets (the highway could be a different story).
Plus, they're cheap, easy to fix and your daughter should be able to bounce off most relatively small objects with some level of safety.

From the above post..."Big is beautiful"...How do you know that his daugher isn't a skinny little thing? Where I come from we usually try not to bring up people's weight issues...and on that note, I guess that I shouldn't recommend that he buys his daughter a large dump-truck...or anything topless!Just having fun with you guys. I personally would avoid the little Nash Metros (no, that isn't another joke about anyone's waistline). I am just not sure that they would be safe out on the highway. Have you ever considered a late-60's Mustang? It seems to me that this might have some appeal to a younger driver and you can still find them around fairly often.

I don't have any good suggestions as to what type of car you should get your daughter, but I ran across a photo today and remembered this forum post. My suggestion is that whatever she does end up driving, you should definately warn her about the dangers of smoking, especially when working with gasoline...unlike the woman in this photo.

Do you think it has something to do with the fact that she is blonde?
