2009 will be my first year attending Iola, I've read as much as I can about it.

The wife agreed that she could spare me for the 4 days and I have hotel reservations a couple of towns away.

I have a few questions on how to best experience this show.

How much can realistically be covered in one day?

What is the best parking strategy, remote parking / shuttle, etc?

What parts of the show are not-to-be-missed?

Are the vendors realistic with their prices?

If I do find that ever-elusive part, are vendors willing to hold on to it until I'm ready to leave for the day?

Is the Butter Pecan Ice Cream really that good?

Any advice, strategy, council, proposals, etc, would be very welcome.

Thanks!

Hello Don, hope you will enjoy Iola, as I have.  I have found it very friendly compared to other large swap meets, lots of involvement from the nice folks in the community and comforts including restroom buildings with sinks to wash up and water fountains to fill a water bottle.

Regarding your questions:

The meet is divided into several sections and with a little planning of the walking I can go up for Friday and Saturday and if I keep moving I can hit pretty much the whole thing.  If you have a family or several friends that may slow you down a bit.  Get to the field by 8:00 so you can have a full day.  Parking is free in (very) remote parking areas with complementary shuttle wagons, or you can park near the edges of the show for $10 or so.

They serve breakfast in a building in the center of the field, ham and eggs or all you can eat pancakes.  The food is good and you can visit with fellow show goers, price is about what you would pay in a diner, but you may have to wait in line at peak times.  The ice cream is indeed delicious and cheap, a refreshing stop.  Food availability will not be a problem, just eat at slightly off times to save waiting in line.

The vendors are a mix of grassroots hobbyists and professional vendors with tools, T shirts, etc, I try to save time by bypassing lookalike cheap tool dealers and such.  Prices for parts are often reasonable and most vendors would not mind holding a part for the day as long as you promise not to be back too late in the day.  By 5:00 some are closing for the day and by 5:00 on Saturday they are clearing out, so do not wait too long to go back and buy.  Good luck and enjoy, Todd C

Todd,

Thanks for the info and advice.  I have allowed the full 4 days to wander.  I'm in no hurry to rush through and see it all, just to experience the show at a leisurely pace.  Sunscreen and water bottles are a must, as well as my most comfortable shoes and hat.

I think my camera will get a workout!

In case of inclement weather, or a sudden storm, are we on our own, or is some sort of shelter available?

Looking forward to a great experience.

Greetings folks,

I just wanted to let everyone know that things are buzzing here in Iola as everyone scrambles to get ready for the 2009 show. The fences are going up, tents are set to begin rolling in later this week, and things are starting to look good. We have posted the 2009 Iola Car Show Directory at www.oldcarsweekly.com/iolacarshow

Be sure to check it out and see what all has been planned for this year's show and where everyone will be at.
