I'll be putting a spare engine into my 1955 Cadillac this spring so I can still drive the car while the original is being rebuilt. The engine is low-mileage, but has not been run in many years (it is free). I plan on using the accessories from my car's original engine, but I want to know of any suggestions to prep the long-stored spare engine before putting it in my car. I've heard such things as pouring automatic tranny fluid down the intake manifold and in the holes for the spark plugs, but I want to hear other people's opinions before I dive in and screw up this engine.Any ideas?

I would change the oil and take the spark plugs out, then put a small amount of oil in each cylinder.  Turn the engine over by hand several times to get oil to the top end .   Put the plugs back in ,if the carb was full of fuel when it was stored you might want to clean out any crud in the bowl .  Turn the engine over with the starter ,let the fuel pump  pump fuel to the carb this will help oil things back up before the engine starts.   ( I have seen guys dump gas down the carb tha goes  past the rings and washes the oil out of the cylinders into the oil pan)   When it starts it will smoke a bit do not rev the engine let the rings free them selfs.  If every thing is good it should run smooth and no smoke by the time it reaches operating temp.

You may want to try putting a little kerosene down cylinder. I have used this method in the past with some success. Also, while I hate to plug any specific products, I would put a little Marvels Mystery Oil in the engine and in the gas tank. This stuff really works well on everything from my mower to my truck.
