I was just sitting here remembering the blue early-70s Pinto wagon that in a moment of weakness my father purchased new back when I was a child.Ahhh, the memories of being crammed in the back of that blue bubble-car for long trips to my grandparents and many destinations in-between.Lucky for me, and not so lucky for my father, like many of the early-70s Pintos, his erupted into a ball of flame while idling in our driveway one fine summer day. Ok, erupted may be a pit of a stretch, but the motor did catch fire less than a year after dear-ol-dad drove it off of the dealer's lot. While I was fairly young at the time, too young to remember clearly, wasn't this a fairly common event for these cars?

Well, apparently you could die a fiery death in a '73 Pinto, but I don't know how often that actually happened. I almost died a couple times in mine, but that was because one time the driver's seat fell through the rusted-out floorboards going over some rairoad tracks, and another time the temperamental driver's side door swung open on its own as I was rounding a corner near my house. I almost did a face plant right on the corner of 2nd Avenue and Maple Street. I sill wonder how I would have explained that to my dad. "Gee Dad, I don't know what happened. I was driving along, and just fell out of the car." I remember it like yesterday -- the neighbors had a St. Bernard tied up in their driveway, and he must have been amused by the whole thing. But my car never went up in flames! I'm very proud of that fact.

I've heard of a few of them catching on fire. But I think that the biggest danger that most people faced when owning these cars...was that someone might see them behind the wheel!Actually, I kind of liked the curvy look of the pinot. However, I believe that the Pacer took the look a little farther and really had a nicer looking car.
