    Bob,
    If memory servers me correct;
    You purchased this car from an auction, correct?

    Auction companies have certain responsibilities asociated with cars they auction.

    If you have a car that has a data plate serial number that does not "match" the serial number (stamped) on the frame, there is trouble present.

    Some persons will change a data plate because it represents a car style that brings more money and is more desirable.
    Examples>> Std Camaro vs SS model, or a Mustang to a Mustang GT.

    Whatever the case, I would be contacting the owner the vehicle was purchased from and placing request for them to straighten this up, not to be demanding, a full refund could be requested.

    Changing serail numbers on a car, or substituting another false serial number on it, a REAL no no Bob.

    One other thing, sometimes a serial number is changed because a legitimate title could not be found or realized for the car, loans, theft etc.
    Easy thing,>> pop on a cowl or door jam tag with matching title and call her good, THATS until something like this jumps back at them and bites.

    Again, the auction co should be notified.
    I am no attorney, but I have had experience in such matters.
    You might want to contact an attorney, hate those boys even though I have done car business with some, the car guy ones had integrity, how ironic, huh.

    I wrote a quite in depth article at the Tucker site regarding such things.
    Seems some Tuckers had stamped serial numbers that did not match the stamped Data plate tag #, easily explained, kind of like early 65-67 Shelby's.
    Hope this helps Bob,
    till the next time,
    john
